Aging is Not a Linear Progression

As our society now shifts toward a prominently aging baby boomer demographic, more studies are underway to better understand how we age, and the choices we make for aging well.  Approaching 45? Time to review alcohol consumption and low carb meal options. Nearing 60 (like me) and it’s time to start pumping iron and build up muscle. Each person being unique, it’s really about self knowledge at every age, and self knowledge is a good thing.

Those of us working in dementia care, would add steps to take for brain health.

Knowing that brain health is connected to heart health, our purpose in life, and our social connections, we can make conscious choices to support ourselves and loved ones at any age. This morning it was all about being outdoors, under a canopy of redwood trees with three residents whose average age is 90. It was spontaneous, beautiful, and supportive of wellbeing for them and for me. We talked about nature, and played a word game. What struck me the most was at the end of our small group activity when one resident showed concern and compassion for the other two with her.  I could readily see that compassion is a big part of her identity, and all she needed was the opportunity to express it.

This easy activity needed only one thing:  the outdoor space to do it. Creating places for our amazing residents to enjoy and connect with nature is a topic that enthralls me and I wish for more time to explore. Perhaps a part of my purpose as I strive to age with strength, self knowledge, and a hopeful outlook on life.

Vaccination Clinic Planned the Week of October 28th

Our pharmacy, RP Healthcare, has graciously offered to assist with fall vaccinations for the updated Covid and flu shots. Recommended timing for our region is end of October because we see flu circulate in January/February and vaccine response is strongest within the first four months. For residents going out to providers for their vaccinations please leave a copy of the vaccination sheet for our records. For those wishing to participate in our vaccine clinic, complete the attached consent form below and return as an attachment via text/email or drop off in my inbox. Medicare insurance will be billed directly by RP Healthcare.
