The 5 Senses and brain change
When we understand how the 5 senses are changing, our caregiving approach becomes more helpful.
Most of our residents have significant changes in vision that make their world more confusing and even scary. How we see our world is the number one way we take in information, then comes auditory input that can also become impaired.
Breaking down care tasks into clear steps helps the resident feel more comfortable and confident. If we see a resident become frustrated or afraid, stop and ask how you can better understand what they are seeing and hearing. Then break down the tasks and communicate them one step at a time. Remember: A resident needs to see you first, then hear you before placing hands on them to avoid a startle effect.
